CLLR ANNA BAILEY PETITION: HELP ME STOP THE SWEDISH WIND FARMS!

Say NO to Vattenfall's Chatteris/Mepal and Redmere/Shippea Hill wind farm proposals on Grade 1 agricultural land.

East Cambridgeshire is already making a very substantial contribution to renewable energy generation. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough State of the Region Report records that East Cambridgeshire generated approximately 508,000 MWh of renewable energy in 2022 - the largest contribution from any district in the Combined Authority area.
Further, Sunnica Solar Farm has been granted permission, Kingsway Solar is set to resubmit its application and further major energy proposals are also being considered.
Vattenfall, which is owned by the Swedish State, is proposing two enormous new onshore wind farms in and around East Cambridgeshire: Chatteris Wind Farm at Mepal and Redmere Wind Farm north-east of Littleport at Shippea Hill.
Together, the proposals cover approximately 8,352 acres, much of it Grade 1 agricultural land - some of the country's most productive farmland. The proposals include up to 47 turbines, each up to 220 metres high (over 3 times the height of Ely Cathedral), together generating up to 429MW of electricity and on site accompanying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The Chatteris/Mepal proposal is close to the internationally important Ouse Washes, while Redmere/Shippea Hill is close to RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall.
The Ouse Washes are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Ramsar site, Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC). It is one of the largest remaining areas of lowland wet grassland and frequently flooded grazing marsh in Britain and supports internationally important populations of wintering waterfowl and rare breeding waders.
Food security, protecting our best agricultural land, our landscape, wildlife and the communities who live here is essential.
As these are Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, the final decisions will be made by the Government, not East Cambridgeshire District Council.
