Handpoke Tattoo Class Intake Form

Hello and welcome! I'm Mikauley and I run Skull Gunk Studio in Seattle, WA. I've been teaching handpoke lessons since 2023.

This form is for anyone who is interested to learn handpoke tattooing in any capacity; wether it be as a potential career path, or simply so you know how to tattoo yourself and others safely.

I teach tattooing as a form of harm reduction, as I believe it is a natural desire for humans to decorate themselves. I want people to pursue this desire, and do it safely and efficiently. I also teach as a way to honor and feel close to my Scottish ancestors, and to help others connect with their own heritage through hand poked tattooing.

Tattooing is an ancient, globally practiced behavior, and is observed in many forms across countless cultures. The traditional, therefore indigenous, form of tattooing was/is all done by hand; with various instruments depending on the region. Thorns, bones, obsidian shards, and knives are some tools that were used to tattoo by our ancestors. 

Certain tattoos hold deep meaning and significance to different cultures and communities, and it's important to treat these designs with respect and consideration. Tattoos outside of your personal heritage should not be applied to your body, as it is a form of cultural appropriation.

This is the lesson outline for learning how to tattoo with the handpoke (aka stick and poke) method. For our tattoo lesson, I will have you pick a small and simple design to practice on a banana after practicing simple lines, curves and circles. If you feel comfortable after practicing on the banana, I'll have you practice on your own thigh.
It's the most accessible location for you to practice, and easy to hide if you end up not super enjoying your first self handpokes. Which is totally normal, some people end up covering up their first self tattoos unless they're sentimental about them. If you'd rather not tattoo yourself, you can just practice on the banana.

I'll show you the basics like setting up, breaking down, cold/warm/hot zones, sanitation, stencils, and have you try handpoking on a banana. (Or different fruit if you're allergic to bananas). Since I'll be providing the supplies, time and space for the lesson, I ask for a $80-$120+ minimum to cover everything. If cost is a barrier, please let me know, we can arrange a payment plan.

Classes generally take 1.5-2 hours, and I would recommend wearing clothes you wouldn't mind getting stained by ink. I recommend you bring a notepad to take notes; you're also welcome to record the lesson. Make sure to eat a good meal beforehand, as you will potentially be tattooing yourself.

For those who want to learn tattooing as a hobby, I would recommend 1-3 lessons. For those who are interested in tattooing as a future career, I would suggest taking 3-5+ lessons. I offer bulk discounts if you want to take 3 or more lessons. I will also remain available for all general advice and inquires, but please be patient with replies.
