Meta workers demand transparency and safety from ICE

As workers who have helped build Meta into what it is today, we are deeply concerned with the use of Meta's technology, and our labor, in aiding the violence being perpetrated by United States Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs & Border Protection (CBP) in our communities. Recent ICE and CBP actions impact our ability to do our best work and harm both Meta employees and the people we serve.

Meta must not be complicit in this moment, and must take every step to ensure workers are protected.

Meta products have been actively involved in this conflict, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses. The entire world is watching ICE commit crimes against US citizens, immigrants, and innocent children using the platforms we have built. Meanwhile, workers who service Meta campuses, feed Meta employees, and build the data centers that power the business have been targeted by ICE.

We demand the following of executives, who have the vast power and resources to ensure the ethical use of Meta products and protection of workers:

• Acknowledge the danger faced by workers - commit to protecting all employees, full-time and contract from this violence.

• Provide a clear plan for how Meta will protect workers from ICE - release protocols for handling ICE on campus. What plans and protections are in place to ensure workers can safely do their jobs?

• Ensure ICE is not allowed on campus without judicial warrants.

• Actively work with all employees who are afraid to leave their homes - ICE is targeting immigrants and people of color, purposely creating fear in our communities. Do not penalize workers who cannot safely work on campus.

• Immediately declare and provide clarity into relationships with ICE - release all policies for responding to demands for the personal data of workers and people using Meta products. Disclose requests and subpoenas, and the government agencies from which they come from. What protections are in place to ensure that Meta is not complicit in this violence?

• Stop censorship and removal of discussions by concerned employees - workers are deeply impacted by the moral implications of how our work is being used for state violence. We cannot build ethical products when we cannot speak of the ethical impacts of our labor.

• Declare all advertising relationships with ICE - provide clarity for workers and the public into how advertising data is being utilized by 3rd parties and ICE to track and target individuals.

We stand in solidarity with tech workers across the industry to demand transparency and accountability in the use of our work and products.
