JAPANESE AESTHETICS THROUGH TEA · No. 02

A Gathering Series by Yoshitsugu Nagano × VERDEA

A gathering series exploring how Japan has found meaning in nature, time, beauty and everyday life — through the lens of tea.

A New Year for Tea: The Art of Farewell & Renewal

Sunday, November 8th · 2–3 PM Manhattan, New York

THE GATHERING

November has long been known in the Japanese tea tradition as the “New Year of Tea.”

Yet before welcoming a new beginning, there is a moment to honor what is passing.

October is the season of nagori — a time to savor the last tea of the previous year and appreciate the quiet beauty of imperfection, memory, and farewell. Even repaired or weathered tea utensils take on special meaning.

November brings kuchikiri, the ceremonial opening of tea jars containing leaves harvested earlier in the year and carefully stored through the summer. With the opening of the hearth, the tea room enters a new year.

From farewell to renewal, the changing tea year reveals a distinctly Japanese way of seeing beauty in time and transition.

Join tea practitioner Yoshitsugu Nagano as he guides us through these seasonal traditions and the aesthetics of chanoyu.

The gathering concludes with a guided tasting of Japanese matcha presented by VERDEA.

Through tea, into culture.
