WHAT IS THE NYC PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL PLAYWRITING FELLOWSHIP?The Lucille Lortel Theatre’s High School Playwriting Fellowship is for NYC public high school students who want to write and develop their own original 10-minute plays. Each year, we select seven Fellows: one student from each of New York City’s five boroughs, one student from a D75 school, and one student from a D79 school. Fellows work with professional playwrights and theatre artists who help them strengthen their writing, explore their ideas, and support them as they develop their plays. Along the way, students meet other young writers from across the city and get to know people who are also interested in making theatre..
The Fellowship is completely free for students, and each Fellow receives a $500 stipend. Fellows also have opportunities to see professional theatre during the program. The Fellowship culminates in a presentation of the students' plays, performed by professional actors. It's a chance for Fellows to hear their work out loud, see how it plays in a room, and share something they've spent the program developing with an audience. Whether you've been writing plays for years or have never written one before, we want to give you the time and support to develop your writing and see where it takes you.
