Iteon report: Metal card programs for ultra high net worth and private banking customers

A metal card can give a private bank a tangible way to recognize a valued relationship. Its strongest proposition combines a distinctive object with selective access and service that respects the client's time. The client should feel known by the bank and, when desired, recognized by a small circle of people who understand the card.

For ultra high net worth (UHNW) clients, the commercial objective extends beyond card fee income. An issuer can use the program to reinforce its role in everyday life, connect the household to the bank and create useful contact with the relationship manager. As interactions move to apps and digital wallets, the physical card helps keep the relationship and the issuer's brand present in the client's daily life.

Personal recognition begins with a selective invitation and thoughtful design, then gains substance through relevant privileges and dependable service. The pricing model should reinforce this experience, presenting the card either as a membership worth paying for or as a valued benefit of the private-banking relationship.

Three audiences for recognition

In this report, we propose to distinguish three audiences for recognition: the bank recognizing a valued client; informed peers recognizing the card's significance; and the client valuing the object privately. We use this framework to analyze practical cases and see how each program makes recognition tangible.

How the report is structured

The first part develops the theory behind discreet status, selective access and the physical card's role in an increasingly digital relationship. It explores how limited editions and personalization can deepen the meaning of ownership.

The second part analyses four examples from the field: American Express Centurion, J.P. Morgan Reserve, CBH Giordano Bruno and Kuwait Finance House. Each offers a different expression of recognition, from a legendary invitation to a cultural limited edition or a gesture of appreciation within private banking.
