Join us for an online workshop with writer, editor and music programmer Arusa Qureshi. This two-hour session is aimed at prospective and early-career journalists, and anyone interested in understanding how editorial decisions are made.
First hour: Pitching for Coverage
Drawing on her experience of reviewing and covering music, arts and culture for different publications, Arusa will share practical insight into what catches her attention as an editor, what makes her want to commission a story, and the common mistakes that make pitches easy to overlook. You'll learn how to identify a strong angle, tailor a pitch to a publication and editor, and make a case for why a story matters now.
Second hour: Working as a Journalist
Arusa will share practical lessons from her own beat, including finding stories, developing contacts and sources, approaching interviews and reviews, navigating different kinds of editorial work, and thinking creatively about where stories can sit. There will be space to discuss the realities and challenges of working in the field, and to ask questions about getting started and developing your own voice.
The session will be informal and practical, with plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.
