The Puget Sound Association of Phi Beta Kappa (PSA-PBK) awards the Myra Lupton Scholarship in the amount of $3,500 to a current first-generation student at the University of Puget Sound or University of Washington. First-generation is defined as having parents or guardians who have not received an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
The scholarship honors Myra Lupton, who served on the PSA-PBK board for more than 40 years. She graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in English and biology, and taught English at Sammamish High School for 31 years. Mrs. Lupton advocated for children and youth; education; parks; and, through the League of Women Voters, civic engagement.
Additional requirements for the Lupton Scholarship include that you must:
• be enrolled as an undergraduate during the 2025-2026 academic year;
• be either a full-time student (UPS, 3 units; UW, 12 credits) or a part-time student (UPS, at least 2 units; UW, at least 8 credits);
• have a minimum 3.4 GPA;
• and be eligible for financial aid based on FAFSA.
You can compete for this scholarship by completing this application and writing an essay as described below.
The essay topic for this year is How has your experience as a first-generation student informed your goals and aspirations for college and beyond? The essays will be judged primarily on the argument developed. Essays should be two to three double-spaced pages, or approximately 500 words, in length. Completed applications must be submitted by February 15, 2025.
Applicants will be notified of PSA-PBK’s decisions by May 1. Checks will be sent directly to the award recipient’s institution by the start of the 2025-2026 academic year.
