Join Archivi.ng's Student Researcher Network

Archivi.ng is on a mission to recapture lost Nigerian history by digitising old Nigerian newspapers and making them accessible online. Accessing historical information from Nigeria is currently a challenge; for instance, locating a Nigerian-authored newspaper article from 1965 would require visiting a local library to manually sift through physical archives. Archivi.ng addresses this gap by transforming Nigeria’s historical archives into a digital format, ensuring that key historical documents are preserved and easily accessible to scholars, researchers, and the public. We want to create a network of student researchers who are passionate about research and whom we can utilise to support and expand Archivi.ng’s ongoing work. We are calling on history students in their at all levels who have access to an archival library, as well as postgraduate students specifically studying history to apply. These students will be selected from first-generation federal universities, such as the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), University of Jos (UniJos), University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), and the University of Benin (UNIBEN). These institutions have been chosen not only for their established history departments but also for the extensive collections of old newspapers in their libraries, which offer valuable sources for digitisation. The students must possess valid library cards which provide them direct access to their institutions' physical newspaper archives. This access is critical for identifying and digitising materials that are often difficult to find elsewhere. By involving students from these universities, the network will benefit from a wide range of perspectives and a diverse collection of historical documents from different regions and timelines in Nigerian history. This approach also helps ensure that Archivi.ng’s digitisation efforts encompass the breadth and depth of Nigeria’s historical narrative, enhancing the scope and accuracy of the project. The Student Researcher Network will be managed by the Research Team at Archivi.ng, ensuring proper coordination and oversight.
