The Patterns behind Performance

This assessment explores the patterns behind performance – the strategies we develop to succeed, belong, and stay safe in different environments.

For many of us, the patterns that help us succeed can also become protective when we rely on them too heavily. These patterns often sit quietly behind our performance; shaping how we behave, how we relate to others, and how we respond under pressure.

When they are in balance, these patterns can be strengths. When they become protective, they can begin to limit us.

For many people, these protections tend to show up in four familiar ways:

-> Perfectionism (the Shield)
-> Performing (the Spotlight)
-> People-Pleasing (the Candle)
-> Pretending (the Chameleon)

You may recognise one strongly, or see aspects of yourself across several. That's normal. Most of us rely on one or two dominant patterns, especially under stress.

The assessment takes around 10 minutes to complete. There are no right or wrong answers; the value comes from answering as honestly as you can, based on how you typically show up rather than how you think you should.

If you agree more than disagree with a statement, tick the box.

If you disagree more than agree, simply leave it blank.

Once complete, click the 'Results' button to see which protective pattern(s) are most prominent for you.

Consent for Research Use

As part of my ongoing work around worthiness and self-protection, I’m gathering anonymous data to explore how these patterns show up across different people and contexts.

Before starting the assessment, you’ll be asked five optional demographic questions (age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and disability). Your responses will remain confidential, and any insights shared in future findings will never identify you personally.

If you’re happy for your responses to be included in this research, thank you; this small contribution may help shape future insights and support for others.

If you’d prefer not to participate, your results will still be processed for your personal use, but they won’t be included in future research.
