First Look Plans

First looks are a beautiful, optional way to slow down together before the day sweeps you up. It’s private, it calms nerves, and it gives you a chance to really see each other without an audience. They’re also a great option if you want to be present with your guests at cocktail hour. By sharing that moment earlier in the day, we can block time for your couples portraits before the ceremony. Then, once family formals are finished, you can head straight into cocktail hour and be with your people instead of disappearing for photos.

Ceremony Pro Tip:

Outdoor ceremonies have magical soft light about 2 hours before sunset. Earlier ceremonies are beautiful too — just be mindful of direct, harsh sunlight on your altar space if you’re getting married midday. 

I’ll work with whatever light we have and make it gorgeous either way!

Family Formals

Tip:

Family formals don’t have to feel chaotic or stressful! Having your groupings planned — and having a go-to person to help gather everyone — means we can move quickly and keep everyone relaxed, so you can get to cocktail hour faster.


We’ll usually start with the largest groupings first (like full extended families) and then work down to smaller groupings on each side. This way, we can dismiss people as we go and move efficiently without holding everyone too long.

Having one or two people from each side who know family names and faces helps family formals move so much faster — and keeps you from stressing about tracking people down.


Please give everyone who needs to stay for formal photos a heads-up ahead of time, and remind them to meet us at the designated location right after the ceremony, while the rest of your guests head to cocktail hour or mingle.


It’s common for a few guests to want to linger just in case — but for your sanity (and mine), I recommend keeping family formals limited to the groupings we’ve planned. Once we start adding extra combinations, it can quickly turn into an hour-long photo session, and I’d much rather see you enjoying your wedding than managing a never-ending photo line.


We’ll keep it intimate, efficient, and meaningful — and you’ll still have plenty of time later for fun, candid photos with friends and other relatives during the reception. 

Solo & Couple's Portraits

The best portraits happen when you’re simply focused on each other, not the camera. I’ll give you movement prompts and little nudges when needed, but otherwise, your only job is to be yourselves. That’s the real magic.

Reception Pro Tip:

Reception lighting can vary a lot — from romantic candlelight to colorful dance floors. I always bring flash equipment and adapt my approach quietly to match the vibe, so you can stay in the moment without worrying about photos.


If you know you’ll have guests who are light sensitive (for example: those prone to migraines, epilepsy, sensory sensitivities, or young kids), it can be helpful to let them know that flash will be used at certain points during the evening.


If needed, we can also adjust to using a constant light setup instead of flash for parts of the evening to make things more comfortable. (This option works especially well during slower moments like toasts, cake cutting, and first dances.) If you hired a videographer, they will also appreciate a constant lighting set up.


I’ll always be mindful of flash use around sensitive guests and can adapt based on what feels best for you and your loved ones.
