What is it like to be a Black person in Academia? What are some of the unique challenges we face as Black students in systemically racist and anti-Black institutions? How can our research help present counternarratives in historically oppressive institutions? In a talk with PhD student in Art History and visual activist scholar Ra’anaa Yaminah Ekundayo, and recent Art History and Studio Arts BA graduate and artist independent curator India-Lynn Upshaw-Ruffner, these questions and more will be discussed in a candid and open conversation catered to Black students - recent and long-term - who are seeking advice and an open forum to share ideas. Being Black in Academia can feel challenging and isolating, but also rewarding, and through a guided conversation between Ra’anaa and India-Lynn, it is the hope that students can leave the conversation better equipped and supported for what is to come in their academic and/or artistic careers.
