Black in Academia Artist Talk

Join us on Tuesday February 18th, between 5 and 7 PM for an artist talk hosted by artist and independent curator India-Lynn Upshaw-Ruffner and visual activist scholar Ra'anaa Yaminah Ekundayo. The event will take place at the Jarislowski Institute, located on the third floor of the EV building (EV.3.711)

What is it like to be a Black person in Academia? What are some of the unique challenges we face as Black students in systemically racist and anti-Black institutions? How can our research help present counternarratives in historically oppressive institutions? In a talk with PhD student in Art History and visual activist scholar Ra’anaa Yaminah Ekundayo, and recent Art History and Studio Arts BA graduate and artist independent curator India-Lynn Upshaw-Ruffner, these questions and more will be discussed in a candid and open conversation catered to Black students - recent and long-term - who are seeking advice and an open forum to share ideas. Being Black in Academia can feel challenging and isolating, but also rewarding, and through a guided conversation between Ra’anaa and India-Lynn, it is the hope that students can leave the conversation better equipped and supported for what is to come in their academic and/or artistic careers.
