Statement for European Sustainability Standards and Tools in Animation

As leading organisations in the field of green production and animation, CineRegio, Ecoprod and Green Film have joined forces to initiate a collective effort to define shared, international sustainability standards for the animation sector, and reach a certification scheme.

Live-action productions are increasingly adopting structured sustainability approaches. An equivalent set of professional tools is now being developed for animation. CineRegio, Ecoprod, Green Film and their partners have launched an international working group to define practical, verifiable and adaptable solutions created with the sector and for the sector. These solutions will support studios in reducing environmental impacts, improving internal practices and demonstrating progress.

These set of criteria will represent a reference framework outlining key actions to reduce the environmental impact of animation workflows. They will also support the creation of a scalable certification scheme that will act as a White Label, helping studios of all sizes track progress and gain recognition for their sustainability efforts, while fostering creativity, innovation and cross-sector cooperation.

The set of criteria will be drafted by sustainability and industry experts and will be open to public consultation and beta testing by the end of 2025.

We call on industry professionals, organisations and institutions to express their moral support by endorsing this common goal. We affirm that sustainability is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic priority to ensure the long-term resilience, relevance, and viability of our industry.

We call for the creation of globally unified, operational, and inclusive sustainability standards and tools tailored to the animation sector. These tools must reflect the diversity of production capacities and cultural contexts around the world, empowering all studios, regardless of size or location, to act from where they are. We believe that only through collaboration across regions, disciplines, and sectors can we build a low-carbon, future-ready animation industry that leaves no one behind.
