Unbound Visiting Research Scientist (Internship)

Location: Remote (UK or EU only)

About us

Unbound is an early-stage startup on a mission to make looking after your health effortless, accessible, and worth your while. We’re creating a future-forward, human-led health membership where health and wellness meets culture, connection, and innovation.

We combine well-designed physical spaces, a personalised digital companion, and a community that keeps you motivated. We are creating a digital wellness platform designed for individuals seeking to understand and improve their overall wellbeing through a dynamic digital twin model that empowers our members to find their unique version of health.

Our approach is guided by our core principles, including the firm belief that prevention is effective when it's personal, sticks when it’s social, and everything we do must be guided by science.

The Role

This is a unique opportunity to help build the scientific backbone of Unbound. We are seeking an exceptional researcher to join our health research team for a fixed-term project.
Reporting to the Medical Director and collaborating with a fellow researcher, you will conduct a rigorous systematic review on an emerging area of holistic health measurement, forming a cornerstone of Unbound’s internal research programme.
The evidence you generate will inform our clinical and product strategy - helping to translate complex scientific insight into frameworks that support members in understanding the “why” behind their health. Your work will ensure that every decision Unbound makes is rooted in credible, world-class science.

Key Responsibilities

● Collaborate with the Medical Director and research team to refine the systematic review question and develop a robust protocol.
● Conduct comprehensive, systematic literature searches across multiple scientific databases (e.g., PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science).
● Screen and appraise studies according to predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria with precision and consistency.
● Extract data and perform quality assessments using established critical appraisal tools.
● Synthesise the evidence base to identify key themes, results, and research gaps.
● Present findings to the wider Unbound team, translating complex evidence into actionable insights.
● Maintain the highest standards of research integrity, transparency, and documentation.
● Contribute to the authorship of a comprehensive internal report that will support Unbound’s proprietary scientific framework.

Confidentiality & Intellectual Property

Our goal is to produce work of a publishable, high-impact standard. We actively support researchers in pursuing academic publication while ensuring that any external dissemination aligns with Unbound’s commercial strategy. To protect our intellectual property, all research outputs (including manuscripts or presentations) are subject to final approval by Unbound. As a condition of the position, you will sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), and all intellectual property generated will remain the sole property of Unbound.

About You

You are a scientifically rigorous researcher with a rebellious curiosity for challenging the status quo in health and wellness. You’re fluent in the language of data, see the human story behind the statistics, and are passionate about turning complex research into practical insight. You work methodically, think critically, and thrive in a collaborative, fast-moving environment where your work has visible impact.

Essential Criteria

● First-class or 2:1 undergraduate degree in a relevant biological or health science.
● Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a PhD or MBPhD programme - or hold a Master’s in a relevant field (e.g., Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Epidemiology, Public Health).
● Demonstrable experience conducting at least one systematic review.
● Proficiency in searching academic literature databases.
● High attention to detail and commitment to methodological rigour.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Strong teamwork skills and comfort working in small, collaborative research teams.

Desirable Criteria

● Peer-reviewed publication experience.
● Prior work or interest in preventive medicine, functional medicine, or human performance.
● Familiarity with systematic review guidelines (e.g., PRISMA, Cochrane Handbook).
● Experience with reference management and screening software (e.g., EndNote, Covidence, Rayyan).
● Understanding of basic statistical principles in clinical or population health research.
● A creative and translational mindset—able to bridge academic evidence with practical application.

Compensation & Perks

● Competitive, experience-based hourly rate.
● Coverage for reasonable, pre-approved expenses related to your work.
● Direct mentorship from Unbound’s Medical Director with exposure to product and clinical strategy.
● Opportunity to shape the scientific foundation of a mission-driven, fast-growing company.
