Backend Engineer

About the role

We seek an exceptional, full-stack software developer with high technical competency and intellectual curiosity to join our team. To succeed, you must enjoy thinking in systems and additionally possess some combination, but not all, of DevOps, data engineering, or ML/data science work experience at scale. Most engineering roles at Wisy are customer-facing, and you must have the soft skills to design and articulate well-engineered solutions to ambiguous problems.
Location: US (Remote)

In this role you will:

• Design and build the backend services behind Wisy's products — APIs, data services, and the infrastructure our models run on • Own the complete lifecycle of the software you create — development, testing, deployment, operation, maintenance, and support • Build and scale model-serving infrastructure: inference endpoints, queuing and batching, caching, and the pipelines that move data in and predictions out • Partner closely with ML and data engineers to take models from experiment to reliable production service • Continuously leverage AI tools to improve your own and the team's productivity ("building AI with AI")

What we value:

• Experience serving ML models in production — inference APIs, latency and cost tradeoffs, GPU/CPU scheduling, or hosting AI/ML infrastructure at scale • Professional experience in DevOps, security, and cloud infrastructure (we use GitHub Actions, Docker, and AWS CDK extensively) • Systems thinkers who enjoy owning problems end-to-end • An instinct for where a system will break before it breaks

Required skills:

• Extensive backend engineering experience — Python, TypeScript, API design, relational and non-relational data stores, and AWS • Strong fundamentals in data structures, concurrency, and distributed systems • Owning problems end-to-end and picking up missing knowledge fast • Working effectively in a dynamic, intelligent team while upholding Wisy's values (engineering excellence, insatiable curiosity, bias for action, ownership, agency, honesty, radical candor) • Excellent verbal and written communication with engineers across the team
