What does silence mean to you?

I'm a researcher studying silence and how it shows up in people's lives. It's not always peaceful, it's something that can accumulate, and sometimes it shows up as the things left unsaid between people. Left unsaid with you that you sit with. The parts of yourself you've learned to keep quiet.

You can see some of the reasons I started thinking about silence here.

This is an ongoing collection. If something has been sitting with you — something you've never said, or said wrong, or couldn't find words for — you can leave it here.

I will read everything. Nothing goes anywhere without your consent. If you leave your name and email, I may reach out to ask if you'd be willing to tell me more. If you leave nothing identifying, your words go into an archive only I can see (stored in a secure Notion database).

I'm not a therapist. If you're in crisis, please reach out to someone who can help.

What have you kept silent?

How long have you kept this silence?

What does silence mean to you?

Is there a word — in any language — for what you couldn't say?
